reminiscing on moon river...

my love for music is something that registers deeply. throughout my story, it has played a significant role in accompanying the happenings of this life. i have discovered comfort, joy, truth, challenge, peace and love, amongst others throughout its melodies.

a long time favourite of mine has recently landed again on my radar. moon river, a song that was written for the 1961 classic breakfast at tiffany's, and delicately sung in the movie by audrey hepburn. those who know me know that i love audrey - her style, her humanitarian and compassionate heart, her movies - so it makes sense that a song that was written specifically for her to sing as her character holly golightly is a favourite.

in getting reaquainted with this song, i looked over the lyrics and something about them resonated with me. to jog your memory, here they are:

moon river, wider than a mile,
i'm crossing you in style some day.
oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
wherever you're going i'm going your way.
two drifters off to see the world.
there's such a lot of world to see.
we're after the same rainbow's end--
waiting 'round the bend,
my huckleberry friend,
moon river and me.

i have heard this song interpreted as moon being a lady and river, a man. moon is a free spirit, dancing amongst the stars, while river is a steady stream, impacting and strong. in the present, their stories are in two different worlds - one in the heavenlies, the other on the ground. however, they're both dreamers, believing that these dreams will be fulfilled as they drift through the world. then, at a particular moment in their lives, having discovered their purpose and passion, their paths will cross, and do so in style. they will find eachother at the same rainbow's end...which awaits them just around the bend. the reference to 'huckleberry friend' has been linked to the old world slang term that uses huckleberry to depict 'a man needed for a particular purpose'. in this song, it could mean 'i'm just the man you're looking for'.

with its beautiful lyrics and enchanting melody, i guess this song has touched my heart again in reference to the beauty of love. as someone who believes that God writes the best love stories, moon river is a tangible example of His perfect timing and that when two do unite, what results is beauty...a rainbow's, or promised end.

i still have this to look forward to...more to come...
